Waves migration guide

How to reinstall Waves plugins on a new computer.

A successful Waves migration has two separate parts: install the correct Waves software versions, then activate or move the corresponding licenses. This guide walks through both without assuming that copying plugin files is enough.

Free plugin scanning on Windows and macOS.

Move the whole setup—not just the plugin file.

A dependable migration accounts for software, formats, versions, licenses, presets, supporting files, sample content, and the sessions that depend on them.

Use Waves Central

Waves Central manages current product installation and license activation. Download it directly from Waves rather than copying WaveShell files from the old computer.

Match the major version

Older sessions may depend on a specific Waves major version. Installing only the newest version can create avoidable compatibility or recall problems.

Move licenses separately

The plugin software and Waves licenses are handled independently. Installing a product does not guarantee that it is activated on the new machine.

Before moving Waves to the new computer

Start by documenting what is installed and which major versions your projects use. Waves plugins are loaded through WaveShell components, so a simple folder listing may not clearly show every individual product or version. Check Waves Central, purchase history, DAW plugin lists, and representative sessions.

  • Scan the old computer with FX Recall and save the inventory.
  • Open important sessions and note any Waves plugins that appear as legacy versions.
  • Back up user presets, custom IR files, and session-specific assets.
  • Confirm where the Waves licenses are currently activated: the old computer, a USB flash drive, or another connected device.
Do not erase the old machine before checking the license location. If the licenses are activated to that computer, moving or deactivating them while it still works is the simplest path.

Install Waves plugins with Waves Central

1

Install Waves Central

Download the current Waves Central application from Waves and sign in with the account that owns your products.

2

Open Install Products

Choose the products or bundles that belong on the new computer. Use filters and search to keep the installation focused.

3

Select the correct major version

When Waves Central offers version filtering, choose the major version needed by your operating system, DAW, licenses, and old projects.

4

Review plugin formats and locations

Allow the official installer to place WaveShell files in the standard plugin folders. Avoid dragging old WaveShell files into the new system by hand.

5

Install, then rescan in your DAW

Restart the DAW if it was open during installation. Trigger a plugin rescan when the expected Waves entries do not appear.

Move or activate Waves licenses

In Waves Central, open the Licenses page. Available licenses that are not currently activated can be selected and activated to a supported target device. Licenses already activated elsewhere may need to be deactivated or moved first.

Option 1: Activate to the new computer

Select licenses shown as not activated, choose the new computer as the target, and activate them. This is convenient when you primarily work on one system.

Option 2: Put licenses on a USB flash drive

Waves recommends a USB flash drive as an easy way to move licenses among multiple computers. The plugin software must still be installed on every computer that will run the products, and the USB drive must be connected during use.

Option 3: Deactivate from the old computer, then reactivate

When licenses are tied to the old computer, use Waves Central’s Licenses page to deactivate them. After they return to the available license pool, activate them to the new computer or USB device.

Licensing rules can differ by product and coverage. Some products covered by an eligible Waves Update Plan may include an additional license. Review your account rather than assuming every Waves purchase has the same number of activations.

How to handle old Waves plugin versions

Waves major versions matter when reopening old projects. The newest supported release is often the best choice for a brand-new setup, but older sessions, operating systems, and DAWs can require a legacy version.

  • Check Waves’ compatibility information for the new operating system and DAW.
  • Do not assume a newer WaveShell will satisfy every older session reference.
  • Keep notes on plugins or projects that require legacy installers.
  • Use Waves’ official legacy or offline installation resources when current Waves Central does not provide the required version directly.

Presets and custom content

Factory presets are normally installed with the product, but custom presets and third-party content may live outside the plugin binary. Back them up separately. The exact location can vary by product, version, operating system, and whether a custom path was selected.

Also preserve any custom impulse responses, sample folders, StudioRack chains, and user-created templates that your projects reference.

Waves plugins missing after reinstall

The plugins are installed but do not appear in the DAW

Close and reopen the DAW, confirm that the DAW supports the installed plugin format, and force a plugin rescan. Check the standard locations in the audio plugin install locations guide.

The plugin appears but asks for a license

Open Waves Central and verify that the correct license is activated to the current computer or a connected USB device. Software installation and license activation are separate.

An old session says a Waves plugin is missing

Identify the major version or product variant used in the original session. A current installation may not map cleanly to a legacy session reference. Install the appropriate supported legacy version through official Waves tools.

Waves Central does not show a product

Confirm that you are signed into the account where the product is registered. Also check whether the product belongs to a bundle, whether its version is filtered out, or whether it requires a legacy installer.

Frequently asked questions

Can I copy the Waves plugin folder to the new computer?

That is not the recommended migration method. Use Waves Central or an official legacy installer so the correct WaveShell components, supporting files, and registrations are installed.

Do Waves licenses move automatically when I sign in?

No. Signing in reveals the licenses associated with your account, but each license still needs to be activated to an allowed device or moved from its current location.

Can I use a USB drive for Waves licenses?

Yes. Waves documents USB flash drive activation as a way to move licenses between computers. The Waves software must still be installed locally.

Does FX Recall reinstall Waves plugins automatically?

No. FX Recall records your plugin inventory and helps organize the rebuild. Waves Central remains the official tool for Waves installation and license management.

Do not rebuild your plugin library from memory.

Scan your old computer with FX Recall, save a cloud-synced inventory, and track what still needs to be installed on the new machine.
